BirdLife Townsville has contributed to the project’s success!

BirdLife Townville has played an important role working with Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) to identify Rainbow Bee-eater roosts in a bio-security project to rid Townsville of the feral Asian Honey Bee and the parasitic Varroa Mite.  The migratory Rainbow Bee-eaters display a suite of behavioural traits that are useful in determining the presence or absence of the Asian Honey Bee.  As a key partner, BirdLife Townsville has contributed to the project’s success, Patrica Swift DAF Bio- security officer stating, "this project has been a success with no further Varroa Mite infected Asian Honey Bees found."
