BirdLife Southern Highlands - a nature reserve for Lathem's Snipe
Since 2012, BirdLife Southern Highlands has been conducting regular Latham’s Snipe counts in an area of federally protected snipe habitat within the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens. We now synchronise counts with a joint Japanese-Australian research project ‘The Snipe Project’, which works to better understand this cryptic species as it moves between its northern breeding grounds in Japan, along its East Asian-Australasian Flyway to its Southern Hemisphere feeding grounds. Three local sites are now monitored. On the strength of this dialogue, Wingecarribee Shire has created a nature reserve for Latham’s Snipe habitat where signage has been erected with information provided by BirdLife Southern Highlands.
