Working with Bundaberg Regional Council to protect breeding sites

BirdLife Bundaberg this year (2016) worked with Bundaberg Regional Council to have an area of Dr. Mays Island in the mouth of Elliot River protected from domestic animals. The area is a regular breeding place for Beach Stone-curlews, Pied & Sooty Oyster-catchers & Red-capped Plovers. Bundaberg Regional Council has committed to close the island to public access for a period that covers the breeding season of these birds. The Council will also provide officers to patrol and enforce the closure, and BirdLife Bundaberg will undertake to monitor the breeding birds from before nesting to when chicks are fully fledged
