Echuca District out and about in 2017
A highlight of 2017 was four consecutive outings (one half-day and three full day outings) in the Mallee early in May 2017. About 40 members attended one or more of the outings. Attendees arranged their own accommodation, transport and food. On one of the four days, members of BirdLife Mildura joined us for a day in Hattah National Park led by their convener/secretary Allan Taylor. Other leaders were Simon Starr and Geoff Russell.
We usually had at least one outing per month, including a joint outing with BirdLife Murray Goulburn (during their Gulpa Island camp) and a joint outing with Friends of Terrick Terrick National Park during their annual TTNP weekend. Both were very well-attended and lots of birds were observed. At Terricks, birds observed included Black Honeyeater, Painted Honeyeater, Owlet Night-jar, Hooded Robin and a mixed flock of about 1,000 wood-swallows.
During Bird Week, displays were held in the Echuca Library, in the Deniliquin Library and at the Echuca Moama Native Plant Expo. Deni member Tom Wheller gave a presentation in the Deni library. Rin helped the Echuca Librarian to set up a display and assisted me during the Native Plant Expo.
A display was set up in "Bernie's Shed" during the Friends of TTNP Weekend and Simon Starr gave an evening presentation. Simon also led a bird walk in the forest the following morning.
In December, we concluded our year with a Christmas function at the bushland property of Pam and John Land in Neilborough (north of Bendigo).
