The Gippsland Lakes KBA - 161 site surveys - our major achievement!
BirdLife East Gippsland has continued to conduct Monday outings throughout the year as well as two 5 day camps. From these outings, 108 Birdata surveys have been submitted. We have been maintaining attendance at 20 – 25 every Monday and have enjoyed welcoming some new members.
However the major achievement of the year has been the completion by our Vice President Dr Chris Healey of a major report on 5 years of twice yearly surveys in the Gippsland Lakes KBA from 2011 – 2015. These surveys have been ongoing in 2016 and 2017.
13 original sites have been surveyed throughout the life of the project to date. These original sites are referred to in the report as ‘core sites’ and they are the focus of analysis of abundance by survey periods. A further 12 sites have been added at various times as the project developed. Nine surveys periods occurred from 2011 – 2015 at a total of 26 sites. Participants have invested over 170 person-hours over a total of 161 site surveys.
