Hunting season opens, threatened species in the firing line again!

This autumn/winter South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania will all have open seasons on game ducks and quail. In the past, information gathered from the BirdLife Australia network has been used to close key wetlands providing habitat for threatened species. This year, information from branches and staff has been passed onto the Game Management Authority, alerting them to the presence of large numbers of Blue-billed Duck, Freckled Duck and Critically Endangered Curlew Sandpiper on wetlands in western Victoria. We are keen to continue to receive information about threatened species on wetlands from across our network between now and July. Key species/groups include Freckled Duck, Blue-billed Duck, bitterns and migratory shorebirds. Sightings can be sent to Jenny Lau (jenny.lau@birdlife.org.au).
