A win for the Darling and the Macquarie Marshes!
Last night, the Senate voted AGAINST draining 70 billion litres more water from the Darling River. The Darling is connected to Macquarie Marshes, a critical refuge for half a million waterbirds.
It's a huge relief for the birds of the Basin.
Last year, BirdLife declared Macquarie Marshes as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) in Danger, because of the proposed changes to the Basin Plan that would have dramatically reduced the habitat quality of the Marshes for Bitterns and other waterbirds. Many of you also signed our petition calling on the Federal Government to stand up for the birds of the Basin.
BirdLife thanks all the Senators who stood up last night for an effective Basin Plan
