Ballarat and Castlemaine: regional groups working together
On Sunday May 26, 2019, BirdLife Ballarat and BirdLife Castlemaine joined forces on an outing at Rise and Shine Bushland Reserve, near Newstead.
The walk included bird surveying using two survey methods and entry on the Birdata app - a 500m area count, and also a 20 min 2 hectare count - doubly important as the Rise and Shine Bushland Reserve is part of the Bendigo and Box Ironbark Key Biodiversity Area.
Ballarat has been a group since the early 80’s, and is enthusiastic about BirdLife Castlemaine District, one of the network’s newest branches. The walk was hosted by Castlemaine District, and bird enthusiasts from each group mingled and chatted, and we also had a few very welcome newbies who had never attended an outing.
Castlemaine District is very much involved in Woodland Bird Conservation, and both groups are excited about initial meetings regarding Clarkesdale Sanctuary and the site as a woodland bird conservation hub.
