Costa talks birds and conservation with BirdLife Capricornia and Mackay

BirdLife Capricornia and BirdLife Mackay attended the annual St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend hosted by Isaac Regional Council.  St Lawrence Wetlands is on the Directory of Important Wetlands and is a haven for many species of waterbirds including the rare Cotton Pygmy-goose.

Costa Georgiadis  from Gardening Australia was a guest speaker at the event and being a keen birdwatcher joined Allan Briggs from BirdLife Capricornia on a guided walk to see the birdlife.  Thirty others also attended the walk and were some were given binoculars to help them to see the birds.  Allan pointed out and explained the behaviour of birds such as the Comb-crested Jacana, Radjah Shelduck, Royal Spoonbill, Pied Stilt and many others.

BirdLife Capricornia has joined forces with the Isaac Regional Council to carry out conservation work at the wetlands.  Costa addressed many conservation themes during his talks including connecting the landscape and bio-security.  In addition there were talks about wetlands conservation, waste management, turtle conservation and river health by NRM groups.  A very successful weekend with conservation as the main focus.
